France has removed the Airport Transit Visa (ATV) requirement for Indian travellers, starting April 2026.
The measure has already come into effect and is being implemented as a six-month pilot program. Authorities are expected to review the results before deciding whether to extend it.
What Has Changed
The updated rules include:
- No Airport Transit Visa required
- Applies to airside transit only (no entry into Schengen area)
- A confirmed onward ticket is still required
Until now, even short connections through France often required a separate visa, despite travellers not entering the country.
This is particularly useful for long-haul trips where Europe is used as a transit point.
Important Limitations
The update applies only to transit. Key restrictions still remain:
- Leaving the airport still requires a Schengen visa
- Travellers must stay within the international transit zone
- Visa requirements for the final destination remain unchanged
Not meeting these conditions can still lead to issues at boarding or during transit.
In practice, it means:
- Fewer documents to prepare
- No additional visa fees for transit
- More flexibility when choosing flight routes
- Easier connections via major hubs like Paris
