Malaysia limits multiple-entry visa to 31 nationalities and four purposes

From September 1, 2026, Malaysia's multiple-entry visa (MEV) is no longer available to all nationalities. Access is now limited to 31 eligible nationalities and only four travel purposes: business, fly and cruise, medical treatment, and wedding tourism.

Regular tourism and social visits no longer qualify for the MEV. Affected travelers must now apply for a single-entry visa for tourist travel, depending on their nationality's eligibility rules.

What changed

Malaysia's Immigration Department restricted the multiple-entry visa effective September 1, 2026. The MEV now applies only to 31 nationalities, down from broader access previously offered.

The four approved travel purposes for the MEV are:

  • Business
  • Fly and Cruise (combining air travel with a cruise)
  • Medical Treatment
  • Wedding Tourism

Regular vacations, tourism, and family or social visits are no longer eligible reasons to apply for a multiple-entry visa.

Who is affected

Travelers from the 31 eligible nationalities can still apply for an MEV, but only if their trip falls under one of the four approved categories. The Malaysian Immigration Department has not yet published a named list of the 31 nationalities, though the official MyVISA portal shows exactly 31 nationalities eligible for Malaysia's e-Visa system.

Travelers from other nationalities cannot obtain the MEV at all under the new rules.

What to do

If you need to visit Malaysia for tourism or social reasons, check whether you qualify for a single-entry visa based on your nationality. The validity conditions of the MEV (up to six months validity, maximum 30 days per entry) remain unchanged for those who meet the new criteria.

Wait for Malaysia's Immigration Department to publish an official list of the 31 eligible nationalities to confirm your eligibility status.
