Thailand's new 30-day visa exemption for eligible nationalities, including Indian passport holders, can be extended by up to 30 additional days through Thai immigration after arrival.
The extension is not automatic and remains at the discretion of immigration officers. Travelers should plan accordingly, especially regarding onward travel tickets.
What changed
Since September 15, 2026, Thailand replaced its previous 60-day visa-free entry with a new 30-day visa exemption for nationals of 60 countries and territories, including India. The key change: travelers now receive 30 days upon arrival instead of 60.
Extension option available
The 30-day visa-free stay can be extended for an additional 30 days through Thai immigration, potentially totaling 60 days without a visa. However, this extension is not automatic:
- Extension is granted at the discretion of the immigration officer
- Must be applied for in Thailand using the TM.7 form
- Requires a 1,900-baht administrative fee
- Approval is not guaranteed
Important considerations for travelers
Proof of onward travel within the initial 30 days may still be required. Airlines may ask for a departure ticket before the initial 30-day period ends, even if you plan to apply for an extension once in Thailand. Since the extension has not been approved at departure, having a return flight scheduled for day 45 or 60 could create difficulties at check-in.
For travelers who know they will stay beyond 30 days, applying for a Tourist Visa (category TR) before departure is safer. This grants 60 days directly and can be extended a further month through immigration for the same 1,900-baht fee.
If entering visa-free, hold a changeable or refundable onward ticket within 30 days, in case your extension is not approved.
